This weekend is the opening of the deer hunt. Traditionally, this is a big family reunion weekend for Jim's family. His dad picks a likely spot, sends out the word, parks his motorhome there a few days ahead of time, and people just show up throughout the weekend. This weekend, there were just Jim's parents, his cousin Terry, and Terry's wife Nancy.
Jim and I went down on Saturday, taking Jason with us. We were armed with food, drinks, and portable oxygen tanks, just in case. Jim hadn't been feeling all that great the previous two days, so we weren't sure till that morning whether or not we were going.
Shortly after we got there, Jim, Jason and I went for a walk. It was great to be out in nature with my family, and my camera, enjoying perfect autumn weather. Jim and Jas found what we think was a badger hole. Jason decided his best defense against a badger was to kick it in the face. Umm... yeah. We explained about badgers, how not nice they are, and that Jason should leave badgers alone.
He wasn't really convinced, but I finally told him a story. If he were to come upon a badger, and not give it a wide berth, it would come after him.
It would be the Brigadier of the Badger Brigade. The Baby Badgers would get under his feet and trip him, then the Badger Brigade would attack, drag him back to their underground city, and do unspeakable things to him. This prompted Jas to decide he needed weapons and defenses. He found a rusted Radio Flyer wagon, some rusted wire, some flattened cans, a rock, and a couple of deer leg bones. He spent nearly an hour trying to wire the rock to the bones for a hatchet-like weapon. The wagon was going to be his shield.
